Today We

treat behavioral health as part of, well, health.

Historically, accessing treatment for behavioral health has been challenging. We’re dramatically reshaping the future.

Behavioral health—which includes mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and schizophrenia as well as substance use disorders— are a major issue in North Carolina and the country. Consider these startling statistics:

Approximately 1 in 5 American adults will have a behavioral health disorder in a given year.1

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people aged 10-24 years.2

More Americans are likely to die from accidental opioid overdoses than car accidents.3

Yet despite these chilling statistics, more than half of adults with behavioral health disorders do not access treatment.4 What’s more, health care providers and patients face challenges when addressing behavioral health needs. For example, people often exhibit behavioral health issues in a primary care setting, but primary care providers don’t have the specialty training or support to adequately address these concerns.

The good news: integrating behavioral and physical health has been shown to be effective in improving health and driving down health care costs.5,6 We’re excited to collaborate with a pioneering health care technology and services company, Quartet Health, to help do just that. The collaboration highlights Blue Cross NC’s commitment to building an innovative strategy to address behavioral health.

Together, Blue Cross NC and Quartet Health will focus on helping primary care doctors:

Identify patients with underlying behavioral health conditions. A Blue Cross team, together with Quartet Health’s technology platform and psychiatry consultation services, will provide physicians with the support they need to screen and identify patients for behavioral health conditions. Certain patients may be able to receive care through their familiar primary care setting

Connect those patients to the right care, sooner. Physicians will have access to data and resources to help them easily refer patients to a trusted network of behavioral health providers

Be a vital part of coordinated care team. Primary care and behavioral health providers will collaborate using the Quartet Health platform, so patients benefit from coordinated care that treats all of their health conditions
